Hoping to get this good one day...
« on: August 01, 2011, 11:00:14 PM »
So what are your thoughts on this?? I hoping to try it this fall I have a few sites already picked out and the music is ready to go. From what I have read it takes a lot of equipment to pull something like this off. A bit of extreme creativity and sometimes thinking out of the box. As part of the youtube community and respected partners do you all think this has a place on youtube?? (If you watch this play it in full screen)

Making these vids is surely more on shear equipment and location then incredible editing skills. Although editing does play it's part.

I think there is a place for all types of content on YouTube, but it's always about what will pull the largest audience. I'm sure this kind of content will pull a large enough viewership. If you had a 1-2 min vid a week that showed material like this, I don't know why anyone would not come back to watch next week.

Only issue later is, can you keep it creative, fresh, and different each time you do this.

Good luck!

While equipment is certainly important, I do believe that you could give the equipment this guy used to several of even the most creative publishers and not end up with this quality of result.  I believe that most of it is the result of a vision the guy had (and of course his ability to carry it out technically).  I bet there was plenty of trial and error involved as well, and then of course the post processing, which is an art itself.

I have to agree with you both. Thanks for the feedback. I have had an idea for this for awhile watching other videos from vimeo. The post production for that had to be edited through abobe after effects  and light room also having the right exposure settings on the camera. I was planning on trying it out with a video camera maybe not to that extent, but I think the filming would take well over a few weeks just to get the right shots. My goal will be to try this video this fall and shoot mostly during the golden hours so the colors are more vivid since I'm limited to post production editing programs.

These night time lapse videos are  typically done with a digital camera using a semi-long exposure time of 10 to 30 seconds per exposure.  So a video is made up of thousands of photographs taken over many hours.   The results are really stunning but it is a LOT of work!

I think the hardest part about doing this though is that you can set a DLS to shoot and different intervals. I don't think that is possible with a video camera though, Shooting a video camera the shutter is only open for a split second since it captures about 29.95 frames per second. On the other hand the video camera I have I should be able to tweak the settings since it shoots as low as 24 fps in cinema and is also remote controlled. I was wondering what a HDR video might also look like. I think that might be eaiser to do since it only involes different exposures and you just mask them together. I've been trying to figure out just how to setup a couple of slow moving pans with maybe a small motor attached to a pulley system and a dolly system, a lot of those shots in that video where also shot with a remote crane too. Who knows I guess I'll just have to try it out and see if I can pull it off.

If you are going to use a camcorder,   you can still do some cool stuff during the day,  film for an hour or so and then compress it in an editor.    Sometimes you have to run it through the editor several times to get the video down to a few minutes long.  (usually longer than most peoples'  attention span on YT hehe)      The night stuff is pretty tricky and you almost need a DSLR  to have that long exposure time to get that surreal lighting effect.    Definitely worth some experimentation.

Yeah I can tell you doing Time Lapse (tlps) is a drawn out thing. For one of my latest tlps videos I've spent 3 days in Paris (that went along with an airshow there) and "all" I got was this short clip...
Yet I'm pretty much satisfied with the result.
A Day in Paris - City Time Lapse

Those guys putting that film into action got sponsorship from Canon and the thing was planned into every single detail. If you are interested in tlps you may check out this page: http://forum.timescapes.org/phpBB3/index.php

That's actually a forum brought to life by the people who did the video you've posted above.

Concerning the camcorder/DSLR stuff I've experimented with and all I can say is that the only thing I definitely need a DSLR for are night/lowlight exposures. For the rest a normal camcorder does a good job!

Great Video I follow the guy on Google+ his name is Tom Lowe. They are running some wicked cameras for their productions.

I like how at :20 or so the narrow depth of field coupled with the vantage point produces a tilt shift-like effect and makes the cars and scene seem miniature (unless you were actually using a tilt shift lens).  Pretty cool. Good job.
